How to become a retail store manager

From greeting customers and answering questions to restocking shelves and working the register'anyone who has worked a retail job before knows the hustle and bustle can be both fun and challenging.

Working in retail requires someone who has great customer service skills, sales skills and math skills to take the transaction from 'welcome in' to 'thanks and have a great day.' And there are many ways to do this job. With a wide range of stores out there, retail salespeople can apply their skills to everything from the automotive industry to clothing. In fact, with more than 4.4 million people employed, retail salesperson is one of the most popular jobs in the country.

But what if you're ready to take the next step?

If you like the retail environment but want to advance in your career, you might consider becoming a retail store manager.

Retail managers, or first-line supervisors, can do everything from personnel work like devising schedules to budgeting, purchasing and accounting.

Wonder how to get a job as a retail store manager? The great news is that if you have retail experience, you might already be on your way to a management position. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail sales workers might have the chance to work their way up to a supervisor role. This usually requires a great track record and extensive knowledge of the product.

Another thing you can do to increase your chances of moving up in the retail industry? Some employers prefer that candidates have a college degree. You might consider retail manager training at a technical school.
